Mazda CX-5 Bests Honda CR-V Head-to-Head --Check Out How in Moon Township

As more growing Pittsburgh-area families make the switch from the tried-and-true mid-size sedan, they're looking for more of what they knew and loved. That means more power for the southwestern Pennsylvania drive, more cargo space, more luxurious accommodations, better technologies, and more than a few modern safety improvements.

The latest Mazda CX-5 checks all these boxes, and in a way that clearly stands out from the rest, even among its own new Mazda car and SUV siblings. In fact, even long-standing segment favorites like Honda CR-V have a hard time keeping up. Luckily, we've made it easy to compare both. See how the new CX-5 pulls ahead here at Moon Township Mazda!

Mazda CX-5 vs. Honda CR-V

  • There are more trims to choose from, ranging from Sport and Touring to midrange Grand Touring and fully loaded Grand Touring Reserve and Signature. The new CR-V offers only four: LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring.
  • Base models incorporate a 187-horsepower, 2.5-liter, four-cylinder SKYACTIV®-G engine, ready to shell out 186 pound-feet of torque. That's more power than CR-V and its base 184-horsepower, 2.4-liter I4, capable of only 180 pound-feet.
  • Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trims feature an up-to-250-horsepower SKYACTIV®-G 2.5T Dynamic Pressure Turbo engine, putting out a highly energetic 310 pound-feet of torque. Graduate to a higher CR-V trim, and you only get a bump to a turbocharged 190-horsepower, 1.5-liter engine, with a corresponding drop in torque, to 179 pound-feet.
  • Every Mazda CX-5 features a SKYACTIV®-Drive six-speed auto transmission, manual-shift and sport modes, and SKYACTIV-VEHICLE DYNAMICS with G-Vectoring Control Plus, all standard and prepared to deliver enjoyable precision handling around Aliquippa. CR-V is less engaging, with only a CVT with a sport mode, and no torque management system to speak of.
  • CX-5 features cylinder deactivation to improve its efficiency. This feature isn't offered in CR-V.
  • Count on great fuel economy, up to an EPA-estimated 25 mpg in cities like Coraopolis and 31 mpg across the highway to McKees Rocks in front-wheel drive. The base CR-V LX is comparable, offering 26 mpg and 32 mpg respectively
  • i-ACTIV AWD®, our automaker's exclusive all-wheel-drive system, comes standard in Grand Touring Reserve and Signature, all but ensuring capability across rough terrain and through bad weather. A Real Time AWD system with an Intelligent Control System is only available across the CR-V lineup.
  • You can tow up to 2,000 pounds with a new CX-5 -- enough for taking a light towable tent camper, dirt bike, or ATV along for your adventure. A new CR-V can only tow up to 1,500.
  • CX-5 offers approximately 11 safety and driver-assist systems throughout its lineup, a mixture of standard and available. Honda Sensing, the driver-assist suite in CR-V, is less comprehensive.
  • Cloth-trimmed, leatherette, fully leather-trimmed, and Caturra Brown Nappa leather-trimmed seats come available, optionally heated and ventilated up front and available heated in the rear. In CR-V, seating is only leather-trimmed at higher levels, and only heated up front in select models -- making CX-5 the more luxurious choice.
  • CX-5 is better-equipped for control of entertainment on the road, with 7-inch MAZDA CONNECT&#trade; touch-screen infotainment standard. CR-V builds in only a 5-inch LCD at base.
  • If you're looking to stay connected and amused on the go, a Mazda Navigation System and a Bose 10-speaker audio sound system with Centerpoint 2 and AudioPilot 2 tech come standard in the CX-5 line's Grand Touring midrange. The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System and 330-watt, nine-speaker premium audio system in CR-V, on the other hand, only come standard at the top of the line, in CR-V Touring.
